Simulated Pharmacogenomics Exercises for the Cybertory Virtual Molecular Biology Laboratory

چکیده
The emerging discipline of pharmacogenomics applies genomic technologies to predict individuals' responses to therapeutic drugs based on the genetic sequences of drug targets and enzymes involved in drug metabolism. The first diagnostic test for genotyping two important drug metabolizing enzymes (CYP450 2D6 and 2C19) has been FDA approved. This assay involves PCR amplification and identification of functionally relevant SNPs using a DNA microarray. We have developed a simulation of PCR and microarray analysis of these important enzymes using the open-source Cybertory(TM) Virtual Molecular Biology Laboratory (www.cybertory.org). Genomic sequences are instantiated from these succinct genotype descriptions by substituting allele sequences onto a framework of the full human reference genome. PCR products can be used as probes for microarray hybridization. Using the Cybertory (TM) microarray image generator[1], we have designed a virtual "SNP chip" to distinguish alleles of CYP450 2D6 based on signal intensities from perfect match and mismatched probe sets.

Perspectives on the Introduction of Computer-supported Real Laboratory Exercises into Biology Teaching in Secondary Schools: Teachers as Part of the Problem
Computer supported virtual and real laboratories are recognized as tools that can help in raising the quality of biology instruction, and raising development competences in students. Yet biology teachers have been treating the computer as typewriter, as a source of information and as a tool for communication, all of which usages are common to all subjects. The uses of ICT that can significantly...

It is critical to learn the theory to work safely. However, it is also important to learn how to apply such theories into the workplace. In addition, adults learn best when they are active partners in the learning process. The authors emphasize not to lecture adult learners but rather, get them involved in discussions, problem solving and hands-on activities. To assist this effort, Purdue Unive...

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family having tyrosine kinase activity. Overexpression of HER2 usually causes malignant transformation of cells and is responsible for the breast cancer. In this work, the virtual screening, molecular docking, quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics methods were employed to study protein–ligand ...
متن کاملUsing two retrotransposon-based marker systems (SRAP and REMAP) for genetic diversity analysis of Moroccan Argan tree
The Argania is an endemic genetic resource in Morocco holding an important ecological and socio-economical benefit. However, overgrazing and overharvesting lead to a serious downturn in the number of trees. To characterize genetic diversity within and among 24 populations, represented by 240 argan trees, four combinations of SRAP primers and eight combinations of REMAP primers were used. A tota...
